800 Stingers

800 Stingers

The Stingers are based on the underside of a Stingray with enlarged gills and earbuds.  These “organ lifeforms” are unique in coloration and hopefully entice the viewer to rescue one by adoption.  However, gallery signage allows attendees to choose adoption or destruction for only $10.

A suprisingly fulfilling crunching sound rewards viewers choosing to smash a stinger by stepping on it.  Soft stuffed fabric stingers in the same shape and coloration are intermixed with the ceramic stingers  to encourage interaction.   Motion activated soundboxes imbedded in the soft stingers cry out for an uneasy transition from safe to fragile.  I am inviting the viewer to experience the taboo action of destroying my artwork.  Releasing control to the audience is difficult but rewarding as the framework of interaction and rules can be modified at each venue.  To date I have created well over 2,000 Stingers!
